AGAM Predicts Trends for 2015

While we know that most marketing money is moving towards social media, few know that the marketing budget is for events, such as trade shows. Connecting with potential and current clients face-to-face is a great way to market and engage with your consumers. So, as 2014 wraps up, AGAM wants to give you a few ideas to look forward to in the future of the tradeshow industry, and what you can do to get more clients.

AGAM Will Create Structural Booths with Bigger Profiles

The saying “bigger is better” resounds with many of our clients. It is the easiest way to stand out in a hall full of exhibit displays. Here are a few of the trends our Industrial Designers and Project Coordinators are forecasting for 2015: integrated technology, curving extrusions, integration of fabric with backlit displays and tool-free setup.

Integrated Technology

AGAM has already designed and developed various structures for our clients that include mounts for monitors and stands for iPads. The integration of technology into exhibit displays allows customers to go to the next level. Touch screen devices make it easier for clients to peruse catalogs and learn more about their products.

AGAM operates two CNC controlled roller benders. These benders work by introducing pressure and creating a “pinch” as material is driven through the roll sets. This force is applied by changing the distance between the top roll and the bottom two rolls. At AGAM, we can incorporate various radii in one pass, going from straight to curve, and then back to straight or even arches. Curves will take your display to the next level.

Integration of Fabric with Backlit Displays and Tool-free Set Up

AGAM has developed a number of SEG Extrusions that allow for versatility and reusability with displays. Integrating fabric into exhibits has and will continue to become popular because it can be exchanged with a new design, saving companies time and money. Another reason integrating fabric will be trending in 2015 is because it is an easy way to cover channels to hide various extrusions. We’ve seen many clients want to create seamless, clean, modern displays, and this is accomplished with SEG fabric. AGAM also has Pliko, a backlit, tool-free SEG Exhibit. Pliko is great because it has no loose pieces, and no tools are required. It takes less than 10 minutes to set up.

Color and Powder Coating at AGAM

With the economy showing multiple upward trends, we see custom vibrant colors being in high demand. We have recently doubled our powder coating capability and can provide our customers with a quick turn around on all projects; large, small, stock, or custom. We also offer most colors in different textures so that you can fulfill your customers’ project requirements.

In HAAS We Trust

AGAM has a longstanding commitment to consistently provide better products and to increase services for our customers. Every year, a substantial budget is set aside for purchasing new machinery, employee training and general plant improvements.  This year, our biggest purchase was a HAAS VF 5/40 XT vertical machine center which was delivered and installed in early October.

All told, this purchase was nearly 2 years in the making.  Last September we visited EMO, which is an international trade fair for the machine and tool industry located in Hannover Germany.  While at EMO, we looked at machines from top manufacturers around the world.  After spending significant time with multiple machine center manufacturers, it became apparent that we needed to go with the industry leader- HAAS.

Choosing the appropriate model that could produce our entire range of products was not an easy one but our requirements led us to the VX 5 XT.  The HAAS VF 5 XT is a substantial upgrade from our current machine center in terms of size, speed and capabilities.  What this means for our customers is that both stock and custom parts can be made faster and to exact tolerances, ensuring that tight deadlines are always met.

The VF 5 XT features 5 axis capabilities, a 60” x 26” machining bed (allowing six vises), a 20 position umbrella tool changer, a 30 HP motor and full CNC control wrapped up in a 15,000 pound package.  We are especially excited about the rotary table we purchased for this machine.  The rotary table will create a fourth axis, allowing the HAAS to perform operations on multiple surfaces in just one set-up.

To supplement the VF 5’s capabilities, AGAM has also purchased CAMWorks.  CAMWorks is CNC based software that will allow us to program complex 3D parts quickly and accurately, rather than manual programming, which we needed to do previously.  Since we currently model our products in SolidWorks, choosing SolidWorks Product Partner CAMWorks for our programming software was a logical decision.

In fact, it is amazing how seamlessly this machine has fit in and become a piece of equipment that we rely on daily.

AGAM is very excited to have finally received this machine and we look forward to using its expansive capabilities to provide better service for all of your needs.  Please watch and enjoy the video below.

Team-based Production Yields Successful Results

AGAM offers unparalleled manufacturing and specialized fabrication services for both large-scale and small-scale projects. About a year ago, AGAM moved into of our vast 110,000 square foot production facility located in Elkridge, Maryland. Since the move, AGAM now provides all its services under one roof in the United States. With state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained production specialists, AGAM provides fast turnaround schedules and precision fabricated products for all our clients.Team-based Production Yields Successful Results

AGAM’s New Production Facility

Moving into our new building a year ago presented AGAM with an opportunity to restructure the way in which work flows through our production space.

With AGAM’s steady growth over the past decade, the old production system had grown and developed that our employees began to experience some manufacturing inefficiencies. These, more often than not, translated into longer lead times and inconsistencies in our end products. A larger and more streamlined work environment seemed like the best way for AGAM to make dramatic improvements to the production process, and moving to a new plant made this possible.

Optimized Work Environment at AGAM’s New Plant

The significant alteration to our manufacturing system since the move to our new facility was the introduction of a team-based production process. The old building did not have space for our employees and equipment to spread out and divide into teams. We now have multiple teams of order processors, equally equipped with the tools necessary to complete orders quickly and accurately.

The second significant alteration was the implementation of team leaders. With this, production questions are fielded almost instantaneously. Also, a helping hand is readily available for complex processes and frequent inspections help attain an even higher degree of quality.

The New Production Process at The New AGAM Facility

Having spent 14 years in our former building, the production area had grown to fill every inch. Machines and storage were placed in what was the best space at the time. With the new building, we not only gained 75,000 square feet of space but it was empty, which allowed us to design the production area from scratch.

We carefully configured the team areas, so work flows linearly. We began with the placement of our aluminum stock, positioning it at the beginning of the team areas, substantially reducing the time it takes to retrieve the appropriate materials to begin orders. Then we organized the machines in sequential order of the production process. See the process through the pictures below:

Begin with the aluminum stock since retrieving materials is the first step in the production process.

The first machines in the team areas are the saws.

Milling machines are used to drill custom holes and to create custom parts.

Completing the team areas are the packing lines.

AGAM’s L Shelf Bracket Redesign Using Laser Technology

At AGAM we value innovation and customer service. These AGAM are deeply incorporated in our approach to new product development.  Taking into account the latest in industry trends and client feedback we aim to create the most dynamic aluminum modular system.

A recent improvement to the the AGAM aluminum modular system came in the re-evaluation of a popular accessory: the L Shelf Bracket.

Product inconsistencies from using punch press tool

The L Shelf Bracket is used to provide a platform for mounting shelves. In the past, AGAM manufactured the tool in house the with a punch press and long strips of steel. At the time, this technique was the most cost-effective and utilized the latest in technology to produce the L Shelf Bracket in large quantities. However, after each use, it was necessary to dismantle the punch press for sharpening.

AGAM Invests in the Latest Laser Technology for Aluminum Modular System Product Redesigns

We needed to find a solution to reduce labor hours and to maximize accuracy and efficiency in production. We decided the best solution was to use the laser, a process referred to as “lights out manufacturing”.

The Redesigned Laser Cut AGAM L Shelf Bracket

Using the laser required a re-think of the L Shelf Bracket. Each piece is now not cut as a single piece, but rather it is part of two sub-frames that surround the L Shelf Bracket and holds the group of parts together. One sub-frame is discarded and recycled and the other holds the group of parts in place for tapping and bending.

The Benefits of AGAM’s Laser Technology with the L Shelf Bracket

L Shelf Brackets made with AGAM’s laser technology

With the use of the laser technology, we were able to control quality and accuracy while decreasing production time and the number of non-compliant parts were left behind. We also used the laser beam to control the placement of parts on the bender. Angles are now consistent, the operator is safely guided through the bending process, and the CAM program is saved on the machine, which is used each time such part needs to be made.

We feel laser technologies have raised our dedication to quality to a new level. Not only has the quality of the product improved but, we can now make subtle changes to the parts quickly and efficiently rather than investing in and waiting for a new tool for the punch press. We can now adapt to the market quickly, saving AGAM time and money so we can pass these savings along to our customers.
