Concept Development of AGAM’s FH2001

The FH2001 is an eight-inch (200mm) deep extrusion that can be engineered to construct custom-sized lightboxes. Here are the most important design objectives AGAM followed when creating the FH2001:New Product Launch at AGAM – The Lightbox Extrusion, FH2001

  • A slim, sturdy 200mm profile
  • Double-sided Silicone Edge Graphic (SEG) frame
  • Option between hard panel and fabric diffusers
  • Multiple light configuration possibilities

AGAM manufactured a small sample using existing extrusions. There are two different sized miter and inline connectors for the FH2001: small and large. The smaller version is intended for frames of 6’x6’ or less, and the larger versions are for frames of 6’x6’ or more.

Because of the slim profile of FH2001, the lights can be mounted very close to the edge of the frame, creating large, fully backlit displays without dark edges. The internal channels are spaced so that the number of LED strips can be easily doubled for an extra bright display.

After the drawing was officially approved, and sample lengths of the FH2001 were received, our engineers built a full sized frame to test the strength, ease of assembly, and lighting effects. They also began determining the best way to incorporate different accessory pieces, such as base plates, side legs, and corner braces. All of these would be used to provide additional strength and stability, which is necessary for large-scale frames.

The best way to attach the base plate was to manufacture a custom plate with two holes. By lining up the two outer channels on the FH2001, this would secure the base plate to the rest of the light box.

Connections are made with carriage bolts, washers, and nuts, just like any other FH frame. By adding the second hole in the base, the bolts do not interfere with the LED strips in the center channel.

The extra depth of the FH2001 frame creates space between the graphic and LEDs, so the light is appropriately diffused and evenly spaced.

Creating a 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and SEG Fabric 

Recently, one of our Industrial Designers had the opportunity to create Silicone Edge Graphic (SEG) fabric images for an exhibit. Fabric construction is growing in popularity throughout the aluminum modular system industry and AGAM is truly leading the way in innovative design and importantly, execution. SEG’s are known for giving the appearance of a three-dimensional hologram and by using AGAM extrusions and layering different types of SEG fabric, we can bring to life your designs.

Want to know how to do it and seize the popularity of this design trend? Follow the steps below for creating a 3-D Holographic with AGAM extrusions and SEG fabric.

Materials Needed to Create 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and Fabric

Extrusions: For this example, our Industrial Designer used VS45308 (2 pieces) and FH19 (4 pieces). These are not the only AGAM extrusions that you can use to create this effect, but for the purpose of showing this technique, they are a good choice to start with.

SEG Fabric: By layering a “solid” background with a “sheer” image, you can easily make your design pop. For our example, the baseball player in the middle of his swing is considered AGAM’s “solid” background graphic, while the blurred baseball in the foreground is a “sheer” image.

The background graphic is printed on Polyknit 9 fabric and the foreground graphic is printed on a mesh fabric called Polylucent. The Polylucent fabric is about 50% transparent. When these fabrics are layered on top of one another, it creates a striking composite image.

Only 2-Steps Needed to Create 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and Fabric

Step 1: AGAM Extrusion Placement

Slide the FH19 (x4) extrusions into the outer most channels of the VS45308 (x2) extrusions. Be sure to always have the fabric channel on the FH19 facing outwards.

Step 2: Polylucent (sheer) Fabric Insertion

Place the transparent (sheer) fabric into the FH19. Then, put the non-transparent (solid) fabric into the FH19 on the other side of the VS45308. 

Important note: The “solid” fabric must be “reverse stitched.” This means that the silicone gasket must be sewed on the outside of the fabric (on the image side). This allows the SEG fabric to be place into the backside channel.

AGAM’s Tips, Tricks, and Advice for the 3-D Holographic

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 1:

Don’t be locked into using the VS45308 extrusion. Similar effects can be created using different extrusion combinations. For instance, using a with the creates a narrower view port, changing the holographic feel. You should use the Channel Converter extrusion on any square 76mm or 108mm extrusion.

Don’t be locked into using the VS45308 extrusion. Similar effects can be created using different extrusion combinations. For instance, using a VS76 with the C3-76 Channel Converter creates a narrower view port, changing the holographic feel. You should use the Channel Converter extrusion on any square 76mm or 108mm extrusion.

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 3:

Experiment with different channel distances that hold the SEG fabric. Depending on the size of the SEG fabric area, shorter channel distances will yield different visual results.

Basic Rule of Thumb: The bigger the SEG fabric, the more you should increase your view port depth.

  • If you’re looking to create a unique ambiance, consider long and tall graphics. Large scale SEG’s with multiple sheer fabrics can create results that are truly one-of-a-kind. Or consider using two different sheer screen graphics and a solid background.
  • If you have the time and resources, consider backlighting the background graphic and using Trifab fabric instead of Polyknit.
  • Be sure to double-check all dimensions for your open size of the SEG fabric, especially for Polylucent fabric. Unlike other fabrics, Polylucent has almost no give, so no matter how much you try to stretch the fabric into the channel, it won’t fit if it’s not the right size.
  • Instead of a photo (as show with the baseball graphic) consider using a background pattern and offsetting the pattern by just a few degrees and/or slight color change. This can create a remarkable visual dichotomy that can’t be replicated. This is because the image “movement” is based on the observer’s location and will change as he/she walks by the image. Watch as people on the floor try to figure out just how the multidimensional effect was made! They’ll be blown away when they find out that it’s just two pieces of fabric.
