New Product Launch at AGAM – New FH15

SEG graphics (Silicone Edge Graphics) allow people the freedom to create large prints that offer excellent image quality, color, portability and ease of installation. AGAM already had an extensive SEG product line to accommodate various designs and applications for SEG graphics, but recently we have had multiple requests to develop an extrusion that will allow non-AGAM structures to utilize SEG graphics. Feedback from customers is a genuine inspiration and a source for product development; such is the case with the new FH15 extrusion illustrated below:

Development of AGAM’s FH15

The FH15 extrusion was specifically designed to screw on a flat surface. The outside channel helps center and drive a screw while creating a silicone groove on the side of said surface. With this surface, you can include a SEG graphic.

To adapt the FH15 to AGAM’s VS76 and VS108 extrusions, we have developed the FH S-Clip. To use with the VS76 extrusion, the slot nearest to the front of the clip is used, and the furthest slot is for use with the VS108. The clip itself can be installed anywhere along the channel and is held in place by the PR1/PR2 combination. Simply hold the S-Clip where you want it installed; insert the PR1/PR2 combination into the channel, slide into place and turn the PR1 thumbscrew to tighten. The use of the PR1 thumbscrew is important because it means that installation and adjustments require no tooling.

Concept Development of AGAM’s FH2001

The FH2001 is an eight-inch (200mm) deep extrusion that can be engineered to construct custom-sized lightboxes. Here are the most important design objectives AGAM followed when creating the FH2001:New Product Launch at AGAM – The Lightbox Extrusion, FH2001

  • A slim, sturdy 200mm profile
  • Double-sided Silicone Edge Graphic (SEG) frame
  • Option between hard panel and fabric diffusers
  • Multiple light configuration possibilities

AGAM manufactured a small sample using existing extrusions. There are two different sized miter and inline connectors for the FH2001: small and large. The smaller version is intended for frames of 6’x6’ or less, and the larger versions are for frames of 6’x6’ or more.

Because of the slim profile of FH2001, the lights can be mounted very close to the edge of the frame, creating large, fully backlit displays without dark edges. The internal channels are spaced so that the number of LED strips can be easily doubled for an extra bright display.

After the drawing was officially approved, and sample lengths of the FH2001 were received, our engineers built a full sized frame to test the strength, ease of assembly, and lighting effects. They also began determining the best way to incorporate different accessory pieces, such as base plates, side legs, and corner braces. All of these would be used to provide additional strength and stability, which is necessary for large-scale frames.

The best way to attach the base plate was to manufacture a custom plate with two holes. By lining up the two outer channels on the FH2001, this would secure the base plate to the rest of the light box.

Connections are made with carriage bolts, washers, and nuts, just like any other FH frame. By adding the second hole in the base, the bolts do not interfere with the LED strips in the center channel.

The extra depth of the FH2001 frame creates space between the graphic and LEDs, so the light is appropriately diffused and evenly spaced.

This oval “cut out/ punch out” allows a CBX Connector to slide easily in and out of these select extrusions: PH1005, PH1045, PH1038, PL1012, TR44, PH1080, PH2000, Slatwall, PH1003, PH1003-B, PH1070, PH1002, TR45, PH1035, PH1028, PH1036, and PH1076.

Sliding the screw away from the CBX Connector sets it to the “in” position. This position is used for placement of the extrusion.

Once you’ve chosen the placement of your extrusion, it is time to secure it. Slide the screw toward the CBX Connector; this sets it to the “out” position.

We designed, manufactured, and assembled our entire booth (excluding the printing of the SEG fabrics) at our new 110,000 square-foot plant right outside of Baltimore, Maryland. We do all of the cutting, punching, tapping, welding, bending, drilling and powder coating at our plant.

Therefore, the possibilities are almost endless at AGAM. Simply send us a sketch of your idea, and we will help you engineer your design with our system (free of charge, it is part of our service). We will then provide you with a quote. Once you have approved the quote, AGAM Aluminum Modular System will manufacture the design and send you a Ready-to-Assemble (RTA) kit. Alternatively, if you have already worked with AGAM and only need a few extra extrusions/parts we are happy to supply those as well.

During the expo, AGAM had the opportunity to meet hundreds of these attendees, ranging from exhibit builders to fabric printers. Many attendees enjoyed handling our extrusion samples and imagining the display possibilities.

Our newest extrusions, the FH1490 Extrusion, and the FH1490 End Plate, which are used to create seamless Silicone Edge (SEG) fabric corners, have many capabilities. As an example of AGAM’s newest extrusions, we created a standing cube display and hanging cube above our booth.

  • The FH451 have CBX42 Connectors (16 pieces) installed on each end
  • Connect the FH451 horizontal beams to the FH1490 vertical posts by tightening the CBX42 Connectors
  • Slide the FH1490 End Plate (8 pieces) into the internal cavity on the top and bottom of the FH1490 vertical posts.
  • Tighten the end plates on the FH1490 extrusion with a screw.

Versatility of AGAM’s Seamless SEG Fabric Corners

Since each panel is independently printed and installed, you are able to easily change the visual message by reprinting the panel. The custom designed, fabricated and welded floor base, which supports the angled cube, can create a visual focal point for any modern entryway environment. The Seamless SEG Fabric Corners can become a visual focal point at tradeshows as well as in corporate lobbies, an upscale retail location, or even a public atrium.

But, for a truly stunning statement, use overhead cubes as your primary exhibit message area. Not only is this signage visible from just about anywhere on the show room floor, but also the aluminum framework is lightweight and SEG fabric can easily be installed.

Finally, we have seen retail environments use overhead cubes to display messages about their products. The outside of the display attracts customers to a certain area of the store while the inside provides more detailed information about the products. Hanging the cubes is a great way to save floor space for other displays while simultaneously conveying an effective message.

Creating a 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and SEG Fabric 

Recently, one of our Industrial Designers had the opportunity to create Silicone Edge Graphic (SEG) fabric images for an exhibit. Fabric construction is growing in popularity throughout the aluminum modular system industry and AGAM is truly leading the way in innovative design and importantly, execution. SEG’s are known for giving the appearance of a three-dimensional hologram and by using AGAM extrusions and layering different types of SEG fabric, we can bring to life your designs.

Want to know how to do it and seize the popularity of this design trend? Follow the steps below for creating a 3-D Holographic with AGAM extrusions and SEG fabric.

Materials Needed to Create 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and Fabric

Extrusions: For this example, our Industrial Designer used VS45308 (2 pieces) and FH19 (4 pieces). These are not the only AGAM extrusions that you can use to create this effect, but for the purpose of showing this technique, they are a good choice to start with.

SEG Fabric: By layering a “solid” background with a “sheer” image, you can easily make your design pop. For our example, the baseball player in the middle of his swing is considered AGAM’s “solid” background graphic, while the blurred baseball in the foreground is a “sheer” image.

The background graphic is printed on Polyknit 9 fabric and the foreground graphic is printed on a mesh fabric called Polylucent. The Polylucent fabric is about 50% transparent. When these fabrics are layered on top of one another, it creates a striking composite image.

Only 2-Steps Needed to Create 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and Fabric

Step 1: AGAM Extrusion Placement

Slide the FH19 (x4) extrusions into the outer most channels of the VS45308 (x2) extrusions. Be sure to always have the fabric channel on the FH19 facing outwards.

Step 2: Polylucent (sheer) Fabric Insertion

Place the transparent (sheer) fabric into the FH19. Then, put the non-transparent (solid) fabric into the FH19 on the other side of the VS45308. 

Important note: The “solid” fabric must be “reverse stitched.” This means that the silicone gasket must be sewed on the outside of the fabric (on the image side). This allows the SEG fabric to be place into the backside channel.

AGAM’s Tips, Tricks, and Advice for the 3-D Holographic

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 1:

Don’t be locked into using the VS45308 extrusion. Similar effects can be created using different extrusion combinations. For instance, using a with the creates a narrower view port, changing the holographic feel. You should use the Channel Converter extrusion on any square 76mm or 108mm extrusion.

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 2:

Don’t be locked into using the VS45308 extrusion. Similar effects can be created using different extrusion combinations. For instance, using a VS76 with the C3-76 Channel Converter creates a narrower view port, changing the holographic feel. You should use the Channel Converter extrusion on any square 76mm or 108mm extrusion.

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 3:

Experiment with different channel distances that hold the SEG fabric. Depending on the size of the SEG fabric area, shorter channel distances will yield different visual results.

Basic Rule of Thumb: The bigger the SEG fabric, the more you should increase your view port depth.

  • If you’re looking to create a unique ambiance, consider long and tall graphics. Large scale SEG’s with multiple sheer fabrics can create results that are truly one-of-a-kind. Or consider using two different sheer screen graphics and a solid background.
  • If you have the time and resources, consider backlighting the background graphic and using Trifab fabric instead of Polyknit.
  • Be sure to double-check all dimensions for your open size of the SEG fabric, especially for Polylucent fabric. Unlike other fabrics, Polylucent has almost no give, so no matter how much you try to stretch the fabric into the channel, it won’t fit if it’s not the right size.
  • Instead of a photo (as show with the baseball graphic) consider using a background pattern and offsetting the pattern by just a few degrees and/or slight color change. This can create a remarkable visual dichotomy that can’t be replicated. This is because the image “movement” is based on the observer’s location and will change as he/she walks by the image. Watch as people on the floor try to figure out just how the multidimensional effect was made! They’ll be blown away when they find out that it’s just two pieces of fabric.
