AGAM Design of the Week: Verizon

With the AGAM System, design possibilities are infinite. So, to help with creative inspiration, AGAM wanted to stoplight some of our favorite designs to help you visualize what is possible with our system.

Using the FH2001 Extrusion for the Verizon Exhibit

The intention of this design idea was to capture Verizon’s brand identity into a physical form. In addition to form, close attention would need to be paid to color schemes and distribution.

By using the new FH2001 extrusion, which was designed for constructing lightboxes, AGAM built four different structures: a red check, representative of Verizon’s logo, which runs through the three black ascending boxes. In addition, the Verizon logo was placed on the third box.

AGAM uses SEG and LED to Complete the Look

The frames were designed with extrusions made for silicone-edge-graphics (SEG), so they can be quickly modified and switched out to update the look.

The red check was designed to be backlit using LED strips and the aluminum frame is powdercoated black to provide contrast while staying within Verizon’s color scheme. The checks is supported by three vertical posts that are bolted through the FH2001 frame and hidden inside of each of the black boxes. For proper installation and connections, customer miter connection was used to hold the frame together.

Additions to the Verizon Exhibit

In front of the structure is a simple display table that can be used for product demonstrations and information. It can also be easily modified to accommodate other AGAM accessories such as iPad mounts, literature holders, and monitors mounts. This type of display is perfect, not only for tradeshow environments, but also as a semi-permanent store fixture or point of purchase display for Verizon retail locations.

2014 Trends at AGAM

During 2014, at AGAM, we were confronted to a large number of creative designs to be fabricated with the AGAM System. Our teams of Industrial Designers and Project Coordinators were able to provide fully engineered solutions to our clients as well as support the fabrication specialists in the plant. We asked the teams what some of their favorite projects were for 2014. Check out what they said!

AGAM’s Aluminum Cladding System

Booth Solutions Using Aluminum Cladding System

Jonathan Knight and Theron Williams worked on a large-scale exhibit at the beginning of 2014 that highlighted AGAM’s Aluminum Cladding System. The Aluminum Cladding System creates a bold and contemporary interior environment, perfect for booths that are trying to stand out in the crowd.

Jonathan and Theron built two structures, within a two-week turnaround. The structure was 16 feet tall by 70 feet wide, including two large conference rooms. This exhibit was significantly larger than typical booths.

AGAM Aluminum Cladding System

Once the structure was drawn, and the customer approved it, Jonathan and Theron specified flat black powder coating that gave the exhibit an architectural and contemporary look.

Possible Customizations with Aluminum Cladding System

The innovative system of interlocking brackets and panels allows for tool-free assembly on a VS45 extrusion frame. AGAM’s state-of-the-art production facility includes the latest manufacturing technologies that fully customize sizes and finishes to your exact specifications.

The Aluminum Cladding System is no different. AGAM has a water jet laser that allows the customizations of the aluminum panels. The laser can cut out graphics, emblems, or logos to take your booth to the next level and make you stand out from your competitors. We understand why Jonathan and Theron chose this project as their favorite for 2014! What are your thoughts?

Specialty End Milling for Customizable Designs

Booth Solutions Using Specialty End Milling

Gabriel Baleanu and Alexandra Hart worked on another large-scale exhibit in 2014. However, they adapted their extrusions for fabric panels using AGAM’s Specialty End Milling. Specialty End Milling results in creating intricate and visually appealing designs.

Gabriel and Alexandra created a 30-foot wide by 40-foot long structure that required a lot of custom work with fabric panel extrusions. The customer wanted fabric panels running along either side of the display as well as on the ceiling. However, there was no easy way to connect the canopy to the larger panels, so they had to use the Specialty End Milling to adapt the extrusion for fabric.

How Does Specialty End Milling Work?

Specialty End Milling is the action by which the end of the extrusion can be milled to different shapes, using various cutting heads. In this case, the extrusion was running the wrong way. So, Gabriel and Alexandra milled off the fin to get it to fit flush against the panel. By milling off the fin, this allowed them to provide support while also giving the impression that the panel was floating.

Gabriel and Alexandra were successful in completely this customized panel after communicating with the client and creating various line drawings before producing the final product.

Drawing and Designing a Back Wall with SEG Fabric

Adaptable Booth Solutions for AGAM Client

Carla Cortbawi and Seth Grove worked on creating a back wall that highlighted the use of SEG fabric in 2014. What made this project standout to them was that the client wanted the wall to be adaptable to different sizes. So, Carla and Seth created a 30-foot wall that could break down into a 20 by 10 and a 10 by 10, allowing for versatility and reusability for their client.

10×10-foot Back Wall with SEG Fabric

Along with the adaptable back wall, the client wanted monitors to be flush with the fabric. So, Carla and Seth created an inner structure within the wall. The client also wanted access to the monitors, so the team had to fit a door into the SEG fabric to access the monitors from behind, which was something new in 2014.

Client Visit and Collaboration with AGAM

While AGAM teams are in constant communication with the clients, it is sometimes difficult to communicate ideas over the phone. In this case, the client flew down to AGAM’s plant to meet with Carla and Seth to finish ironing out the details. While the client was at AGAM, Carla was able to complete the drawings due to collaboration on the stop. Carla and Seth completed the project within the customer’s specifications. This project was a perfect opportunity to work closely with the client and to strengthen what looks like a promising beneficial and long lasting relationship.

AGAM’s Capabilities All-In-One Project

We’ve highlighted the Aluminum Cladding System, the Specialty End Milling Solutions, and SEG Fabric. But now, we are going to focus on a project that highlights a variety of AGAM’s capabilities.

SEMA Show and AGAM

Adam Frederick and Oscar Sandoval worked with a client who, every year, creates a new design and new theme for the SpeciSEMAalty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) show. SEMA is a trade association consisting of a diverse group of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, publishing companies, auto restorers, street-rod builders, re-stylers, car clubs, race teams and more. These individuals buy, sell and use all kinds of specialty parts and accessories to make vehicles more attractive, more unique, more convenient, faster, safer, more fun and even like new again.

Adam and Oscar used AGAM System’s powder coating, SEG fabric, and aluminum to create the client’s display. One of the main focuses was “hiding” the structure using SEG fabric to cover the extrusions.

Client Understood AGAM System

Since the client was familiar with the AGAM System, Adam and Oscar did not have to re-engineer their rendering since they used the AGAM profile to create the exhibit. This 40 by 40 display highlighted AGAM’s FH1490 Extrusion that is used to hold SEG fabric. Another fun fact about this project is that the client’s exhibit design was nominated for best of show, and Adam and Oscar helped make that happen!

At AGAM we listen carefully to our client’s needs and concerns to provide the best products in the aluminum modular design system industry supporting our client’s success.

Our canopy connector is typically used in pairs to support a canopy. One of AGAM’s customers recently came to us with a design that used our canopy connector to support a cantilever structure. In this instance, only one canopy connector was used and after several uses, the canopy connector started to become weak. The constant re-tightening due to the uneven load of the cantilever structure, had worn out the canopy connector.

AGAM Resolves the Canopy Connector Problem

When the customer called AGAM to ask for suggestions on how to resolve the problem, AGAM decided to discuss the issue with the project coordinators and a few designers. These individuals agreed that our current product, which had only one screw on each side of the connector, was not sufficient for this client’s application.

After some brainstorming, AGAM designers and project coordinators came up with a custom solution, which allowed the connector to function in the same way, but offered an extra screw to lock the connector in place. This new design required a new custom insert block and bracket to accommodate the additional screw needed to secure the canopy connector at a given angle.

Creating the Sliding Door at AGAM

The contemporary sliding door was designed as a stylish alternative to the regular swinging door. Every aspect has been designed with our client’s needs in mind. From form to function, AGAM designed this product to work as great as it looks. Here are five benefits to using the AGAM Sliding Door:

1. The AGAM Sliding Door Maximizes Space

Whether it’s a conference room or a storage closet, every inch counts in the exhibit design industry. The sliding door allows designers to maximize space and create privacy at the same time.

2. The AGAM Sliding Door is Completely Customizable

The track is made of extrusion MR1200 and the door is made of extrusion PH1070 or PH1003. AGAM can cut these extrusions to any length, so the sliding door can fit any doorway. You could even replace your current swinging door. Or, if your doorway is large enough, AGAM can make a double sliding door.

3. The AGAM Sliding Door is Easy to Assemble

It has an upper track that attaches to the partition after the fact. Simply build the wall using only a hex key or use an existing wall, and then simply add the upper track with a clever specially designed part. The door can then be hung in place and slides using two roller brackets, which hook onto the track.

Team-based Production Yields Successful Results

AGAM offers unparalleled manufacturing and specialized fabrication services for both large-scale and small-scale projects. About a year ago, AGAM moved into of our vast 110,000 square foot production facility located in Elkridge, Maryland. Since the move, AGAM now provides all its services under one roof in the United States. With state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained production specialists, AGAM provides fast turnaround schedules and precision fabricated products for all our clients.Team-based Production Yields Successful Results

AGAM’s New Production Facility

Moving into our new building a year ago presented AGAM with an opportunity to restructure the way in which work flows through our production space.

With AGAM’s steady growth over the past decade, the old production system had grown and developed that our employees began to experience some manufacturing inefficiencies. These, more often than not, translated into longer lead times and inconsistencies in our end products. A larger and more streamlined work environment seemed like the best way for AGAM to make dramatic improvements to the production process, and moving to a new plant made this possible.

Optimized Work Environment at AGAM’s New Plant

The significant alteration to our manufacturing system since the move to our new facility was the introduction of a team-based production process. The old building did not have space for our employees and equipment to spread out and divide into teams. We now have multiple teams of order processors, equally equipped with the tools necessary to complete orders quickly and accurately.

The second significant alteration was the implementation of team leaders. With this, production questions are fielded almost instantaneously. Also, a helping hand is readily available for complex processes and frequent inspections help attain an even higher degree of quality.

Team-based Production Yields Successful Results

The New Production Process at The New AGAM Facility

Having spent 14 years in our former building, the production area had grown to fill every inch. Machines and storage were placed in what was the best space at the time. With the new building, we not only gained 75,000 square feet of space but it was empty, which allowed us to design the production area from scratch.

We carefully configured the team areas, so work flows linearly. We began with the placement of our aluminum stock, positioning it at the beginning of the team areas, substantially reducing the time it takes to retrieve the appropriate materials to begin orders. Then we organized the machines in sequential order of the production process. See the process through the pictures below:

The Process of Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM System

AGAM appreciates how clients challenge and inspire us to create fun and creative designs. AGAM had a customer that wanted palm trees for their exhibit. The materials and techniques AGAM used in the design of this unconventional display resulted in a satisfied client and a lovely exhibit.

Step 1 in Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM Aluminum Modular System: Create the Base of the Palm Tree

First, AGAM industrial designers created the trunk and base of the palm tree. For the trunk, they used a 3-cord truss because it offered an industrial appearance while also providing the support necessary to hold the weight of the palms. The trunk of the palm tree needed a sturdy base so it could stand autonomously. So, AGAM’s industrial designer used a large steel base, which was heavy enough to maintain the weight of the tree while holding it down. Then to make the base look like an actual palm tree, it was powder coated a tan color.

Making a Palm Tree with the AGAM System

Step 2 in Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM Aluminum Modular System: Attaching the Base of the Tree to the Palms

Once the base and the trunk were completed, AGAM’s designer had to determine how to attach the palms to the trunk in a way that looked natural. Their solution was a hub, made of custom aluminum pieces cut on the Waterjet, bolted together. AGAM’s Waterjet Center fabricates unique parts and pieces to exact designer specifications without the lengthy set-up time and costly tool and die fabrication. The Waterjet Center turns design concepts into workable parts within days!

Step 3 in Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM Aluminum Modular System: Designing the Palms for the Palm Tree

The AGAM industrial designer created the palms out of AGAM extrusion MR1100 and then powdered coated them green. The palms slide onto the custom inserts on the hub and then the hub was bolted onto the truss.

To reduce setup costs, the AGAM industrial designer used two different curves to make the palms. One large curve and one small curve with ends cut at 90 degrees and 15 degrees. These curves were alternated around the hub to create a natural looking canopy of palms.

Types of Trusses at AGAM

Within the truss category, AGAM has a variety of choices. We could use a two-cord truss (two extrusions and one web), a three-cord truss (three extrusions and three webs) and a four-cord truss (four extrusions and four webs).

After review and discussion with the customer, we decided to use a four-cord truss.

2-Cord

3-Cord

4-Cord

AGAM Improvements to Seventy-Foot Diameter Truss

AGAM offered suggestions to improve the strength and look of the final design. First, AGAM made the ring a full, uninterrupted piece. With the ring being a complete circle (like the ring you wear on your finger) there is no beginning or end. By having a fully, uninterrupted ring the stability and strength of the truss is improved.

Second, the legs were designed with a four-cord truss, so they could be plugged in underneath the ring at any point. This would assist in the assembly of the truss or if adjustments needed to be made.

AGAM’s Methods for Securing the Truss

Due to the size, span, and weight of the truss ring, AGAM used more than one method to secure the ring to the legs. First, we used our CBX Connector (labeled A in the drawing) because it delivers a quick and simple connection during the assembly.

Next, to reinforce the connection one more, we used Gusset Corner Plates (labeled B in the drawing above), which provided a large connecting surface between the ring and the leg. The Corner Gusset Plate expands into the extrusion channels at each corner, between the ring and the leg.

Lastly, custom hold down plates, that were engineered and made by AGAM (labeled C in the drawing), were used to secure the truss ring to the truss legs. This was done using bolts to attach the custom hold down plates to the support bars of each truss leg (see drawing).
