AGAM Design of the Week: Verizon

With the AGAM System, design possibilities are infinite. So, to help with creative inspiration, AGAM wanted to stoplight some of our favorite designs to help you visualize what is possible with our system.

Using the FH2001 Extrusion for the Verizon Exhibit

The intention of this design idea was to capture Verizon’s brand identity into a physical form. In addition to form, close attention would need to be paid to color schemes and distribution.

By using the new FH2001 extrusion, which was designed for constructing lightboxes, AGAM built four different structures: a red check, representative of Verizon’s logo, which runs through the three black ascending boxes. In addition, the Verizon logo was placed on the third box.

AGAM uses SEG and LED to Complete the Look

The frames were designed with extrusions made for silicone-edge-graphics (SEG), so they can be quickly modified and switched out to update the look.

The red check was designed to be backlit using LED strips and the aluminum frame is powdercoated black to provide contrast while staying within Verizon’s color scheme. The checks is supported by three vertical posts that are bolted through the FH2001 frame and hidden inside of each of the black boxes. For proper installation and connections, customer miter connection was used to hold the frame together.

Additions to the Verizon Exhibit

In front of the structure is a simple display table that can be used for product demonstrations and information. It can also be easily modified to accommodate other AGAM accessories such as iPad mounts, literature holders, and monitors mounts. This type of display is perfect, not only for tradeshow environments, but also as a semi-permanent store fixture or point of purchase display for Verizon retail locations.

Custom Angles

Complex projects on a tight schedule are no problem for AGAM’s experienced and well equipped production staff.  From custom fabricated steel parts to mitered corners to powder coating, AGAM’s breadth of services is extensive.  One specialty that is commonly taken advantage of is the cutting of custom angles.  Most of our profiles can be cut at an extensive range of angles, the most basic of which is the mitered 45 degree corner.  Mitered corners are a great way to achieve a clean look.

AGAM’s technical expertise along with our extensive machining capabilities allow for the precise production of a wide variety of angles.  Each of AGAM’s production teams is equipped with three miter saws capable of cuts at +/-60° from 90°.  In addition to the saws in each team, we have one saw whose specific function is to cut more extreme angles.   This saw can cut profiles at +/-67.5° from 90° and is digitally adjustable up to one tenth of a degree.

Our double miter saw features digital adjustability of both angle and length and allows us to cut both ends of an extrusion simultaneously.

When it comes to angles precision is essential so we equip all of our production specialists with the tools necessary to verify the accuracy and consistency of an order.  Many of these orders require custom angles.  Whether it is for structural support inside or outside of a frame, or a uniquely shaped FH frame, these atypical angles are quickly produced.  If being used for internal support we usually will be required to make custom angled CBX connectors.  These connectors are cut to the same angle as the extrusion that it is installed in, allowing for a firm connection.

One interesting use of mitered corners is the installation of horizontally miter cut FH19 into vertically miter cut PH1028.  This allows for a seamless wrap around SEG fabric.

Another example is the below VS76 corner, which was welded together with FH76 installed inside allowing for the use of SEG fabric.  The frame is then powder coated to produce a seamless corner.

Below custom angled pieces (with custom CBX connectors) allowed us to mount the curved ring to base plates.

Accessories related to custom cut angles such as mounting plates, miter connectors or support brackets are produced using a variety of other machines, all of them in house.  Custom miter connectors are cut then drilled and tapped.  These all make for more interesting designs unique to each project.  Whether the angles are for a simple FH Frame, a small kiosk, or a complex display, AGAM has the expertise to quickly and accurately cut the custom angles your project requires.

AGAM was recently approached by a client for a booth design consisting of our truss system. Our system is composed of several key parts including the truss itself, the endplate for the sides of each truss, and the top plate that supports the truss. The top plate is essential to the construction of the truss because it serves as the connection point between the vertical extrusion and the truss. It also controls the angle at which the truss extends outwards from the vertical extrusion. Although this offers a very clean and effective solution to any standard truss system, the current design of the top plate does not allow any further extrusions to be built above an existing truss. Therefore, it is impossible to construct multiple levels of trusses off of a single vertical extrusion. Our client’s truss system, however, asked for exactly this. It was our job to work around our existing products and design a solution that would suit the customer’s needs.

The current top plate consist of four main pieces: two outer plates (which provide space for the endplates to attach), one spacer (which sits in between the outer plates), and one insert block (which is screwed into the underside of the bottom outer plate and fits inside of the vertical extrusion). To secure another vertical extrusion above this top plate, we needed to figure out how to attach another insert block onto the top as well.

The solution we engineered provides a simple and easy way for the client to assemble their truss system. It involves using our laser cutter to create a custom outer plate and spacer, each with an extra set of holes. Instead of having only four holes like the current parts, there are now eight. The extra holes become the connection for the insert block to the top, while still allowing the attachment of the bottom insert block as well. Below is an exploded view demonstrating the new assembly:

The insert blocks are held in place by four screws each that are threaded through the outer plate. The holes in the outer plate are counter sunk to allow the screws to sit flush with the surface to avoid interfering with the spacer. Four bolts are used to hold all of the pieces together securely. The hole placement for these bolts was designed to allocate enough space for the insert block to fit between them while still leaving enough room along the outside for the vertical extrusion to fit over top. This was important because when the part is fully-assembled, the bolts are completely hidden from view.

We recently adapted the canopy connector in our AGAM aluminum modular system to fantastic results and satisfied our client requests completely. The AGAM aluminum modular system lends itself to easily to unique and creative customizations satisfying clients requests and design specifications. The adaptation of the canopy connector resulted in a unique and interesting aluminum modular construction made out of the AGAM aluminum modular system.

We appreciate our clients for helping us to see our own AGAM aluminum modular system in a different light with their creative design requests. Our canopy connector is typically used in pairs to support a canopy. One of AGAM’s customers recently came to us with a design that used our canopy connector to support a cantilever structure. In this instance, only one canopy connector was used and after several uses, the canopy connector started to become weak. The constant re-tightening due to the uneven load of the cantilever structure, had worn out the canopy connector.

AGAM Resolves the Canopy Connector Problem

When the customer called AGAM to ask for suggestions on how to resolve the problem, AGAM decided to discuss the issue with the project coordinators and a few designers. These individuals agreed that our current product, which had only one screw on each side of the connector, was not sufficient for this client’s application.

After some brainstorming, AGAM designers and project coordinators came up with a custom solution, which allowed the connector to function in the same way, but offered an extra screw to lock the connector in place. This new design required a new custom insert block and bracket to accommodate the additional screw needed to secure the canopy connector at a given angle.

The Process of Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM System

AGAM appreciates how clients challenge and inspire us to create fun and creative designs. AGAM had a customer that wanted palm trees for their exhibit. The materials and techniques AGAM used in the design of this unconventional display resulted in a satisfied client and a lovely exhibit.

Step 1 in Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM Aluminum Modular System: Create the Base of the Palm Tree

First, AGAM industrial designers created the trunk and base of the palm tree. For the trunk, they used a 3-cord truss because it offered an industrial appearance while also providing the support necessary to hold the weight of the palms. The trunk of the palm tree needed a sturdy base so it could stand autonomously. So, AGAM’s industrial designer used a large steel base, which was heavy enough to maintain the weight of the tree while holding it down. Then to make the base look like an actual palm tree, it was powder coated a tan color.

Step 2 in Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM Aluminum Modular System: Attaching the Base of the Tree to the Palms

Once the base and the trunk were completed, AGAM’s designer had to determine how to attach the palms to the trunk in a way that looked natural. Their solution was a hub, made of custom aluminum pieces cut on the Waterjet, bolted together. AGAM’s Waterjet Center fabricates unique parts and pieces to exact designer specifications without the lengthy set-up time and costly tool and die fabrication. The Waterjet Center turns design concepts into workable parts within days!

Step 3 in Creating a Palm Tree Using the AGAM Aluminum Modular System: Designing the Palms for the Palm Tree

The AGAM industrial designer created the palms out of AGAM extrusion MR1100 and then powdered coated them green. The palms slide onto the custom inserts on the hub and then the hub was bolted onto the truss.

To reduce setup costs, the AGAM industrial designer used two different curves to make the palms. One large curve and one small curve with ends cut at 90 degrees and 15 degrees. These curves were alternated around the hub to create a natural looking canopy of palms.

Types of Trusses at AGAM

Within the truss category, AGAM has a variety of choices. We could use a two-cord truss (two extrusions and one web), a three-cord truss (three extrusions and three webs) and a four-cord truss (four extrusions and four webs).

After review and discussion with the customer, we decided to use a four-cord truss.

AGAM Improvements to Seventy-Foot Diameter Truss

AGAM offered suggestions to improve the strength and look of the final design. First, AGAM made the ring a full, uninterrupted piece. With the ring being a complete circle (like the ring you wear on your finger) there is no beginning or end. By having a fully, uninterrupted ring the stability and strength of the truss is improved.

Second, the legs were designed with a four-cord truss, so they could be plugged in underneath the ring at any point. This would assist in the assembly of the truss or if adjustments needed to be made.

AGAM’s Methods for Securing the Truss

Due to the size, span, and weight of the truss ring, AGAM used more than one method to secure the ring to the legs. First, we used our CBX Connector (labeled A in the drawing) because it delivers a quick and simple connection during the assembly.

Next, to reinforce the connection one more, we used Gusset Corner Plates (labeled B in the drawing above), which provided a large connecting surface between the ring and the leg. The Corner Gusset Plate expands into the extrusion channels at each corner, between the ring and the leg.

Lastly, custom hold down plates, that were engineered and made by AGAM (labeled C in the drawing), were used to secure the truss ring to the truss legs. This was done using bolts to attach the custom hold down plates to the support bars of each truss leg (see drawing).
