AGAM Employee Spotlight: Dan, Industrial Designer

Meet AGAM’s new Industrial Designer, Dan.

Joining AGAM as a New Industrial Designer

Recently I was offered the opportunity to join AGAM as their new industrial designer. I jumped at the chance to start my career after graduation. I moved down to a great place in the city of Baltimore, which happens to be a short commute to the AGAM office in Elkridge, Maryland.

I was very anxious to begin working as an industrial designer. After studying for five years and preparing for the real thing, had me “chomping at the bit.” I wanted to get on the computer right away and start designing with CAD. However, at AGAM there is a particular rite of passage you must complete before you begin the type of work that you were hired for.

Every AGAM employee must spend a week in the plant to gain insight of how production is completed in-house. I had never worked in a manufacturing plant before, but with several summers of experience working in construction under my belt, I was not afraid to get my hands dirty. In fact, I enjoyed learning the processes, which go into AGAM’s long list of products.

I learned about the machines and how they are used, this one is a punching press, used to punch holes in the extrusions.

Dan’s Thoughts After His First Few Weeks at AGAM

I think I gained a first-hand understanding of everything AGAM does in the plant. However, a few weeks later, I am finding out that there are several more processes, so much background experiences, and an abundant amount of knowledge that I will still be learning for a long time. I found this experience very helpful as I have now transitioned into the office and began my work as a designer.

Getting to know everyone in the office has also been quite significant to my experience at AGAM. I have particularly appreciated learning more about the people who fabricate the designs and cut lists issued by the office.

The AGAM atmosphere is easy-going with a high level of professionalism still being maintained. This type of environment fosters a good morale, enticing everyone to work efficiently and effectively. There is an open line of communication between all employees at AGAM, who all have the same goal: to provide our clients with fully engineered solutions.

I spent time in the parts room, learning about them, how inventory is managed and how orders are fulfilled.
