How to Design a 3-D Holographic Look Using SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusions

Creating a 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and SEG Fabric 

Recently, one of our Industrial Designers had the opportunity to create Silicone Edge Graphic (SEG) fabric images for an exhibit. Fabric construction is growing in popularity throughout the aluminum modular system industry and AGAM is truly leading the way in innovative design and importantly, execution. SEG’s are known for giving the appearance of a three-dimensional hologram and by using AGAM extrusions and layering different types of SEG fabric, we can bring to life your designs.

Want to know how to do it and seize the popularity of this design trend? Follow the steps below for creating a 3-D Holographic with AGAM extrusions and SEG fabric.

Materials Needed to Create 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and Fabric

Extrusions: For this example, our Industrial Designer used VS45308 (2 pieces) and FH19 (4 pieces). These are not the only AGAM extrusions that you can use to create this effect, but for the purpose of showing this technique, they are a good choice to start with.

SEG Fabric: By layering a “solid” background with a “sheer” image, you can easily make your design pop. For our example, the baseball player in the middle of his swing is considered AGAM’s “solid” background graphic, while the blurred baseball in the foreground is a “sheer” image.

The background graphic is printed on Polyknit 9 fabric and the foreground graphic is printed on a mesh fabric called Polylucent. The Polylucent fabric is about 50% transparent. When these fabrics are layered on top of one another, it creates a striking composite image.

Only 2-Steps Needed to Create 3-D Holographic with AGAM Extrusions and Fabric

Step 1: AGAM Extrusion Placement

Slide the FH19 (x4) extrusions into the outer most channels of the VS45308 (x2) extrusions. Be sure to always have the fabric channel on the FH19 facing outwards.

Step 2: Polylucent (sheer) Fabric Insertion

Place the transparent (sheer) fabric into the FH19. Then, put the non-transparent (solid) fabric into the FH19 on the other side of the VS45308. 

Important note: The “solid” fabric must be “reverse stitched.” This means that the silicone gasket must be sewed on the outside of the fabric (on the image side). This allows the SEG fabric to be place into the backside channel.

AGAM’s Tips, Tricks, and Advice for the 3-D Holographic

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 1:

Don’t be locked into using the VS45308 extrusion. Similar effects can be created using different extrusion combinations. For instance, using a with the creates a narrower view port, changing the holographic feel. You should use the Channel Converter extrusion on any square 76mm or 108mm extrusion.

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 2:

Don’t be locked into using the VS45308 extrusion. Similar effects can be created using different extrusion combinations. For instance, using a VS76 with the C3-76 Channel Converter creates a narrower view port, changing the holographic feel. You should use the Channel Converter extrusion on any square 76mm or 108mm extrusion.

AGAM SEG Fabric and AGAM Extrusion for 3-D Holographics Tip 3:

Experiment with different channel distances that hold the SEG fabric. Depending on the size of the SEG fabric area, shorter channel distances will yield different visual results.

Basic Rule of Thumb: The bigger the SEG fabric, the more you should increase your view port depth.

  • If you’re looking to create a unique ambiance, consider long and tall graphics. Large scale SEG’s with multiple sheer fabrics can create results that are truly one-of-a-kind. Or consider using two different sheer screen graphics and a solid background.
  • If you have the time and resources, consider backlighting the background graphic and using Trifab fabric instead of Polyknit.
  • Be sure to double-check all dimensions for your open size of the SEG fabric, especially for Polylucent fabric. Unlike other fabrics, Polylucent has almost no give, so no matter how much you try to stretch the fabric into the channel, it won’t fit if it’s not the right size.
  • Instead of a photo (as show with the baseball graphic) consider using a background pattern and offsetting the pattern by just a few degrees and/or slight color change. This can create a remarkable visual dichotomy that can’t be replicated. This is because the image “movement” is based on the observer’s location and will change as he/she walks by the image. Watch as people on the floor try to figure out just how the multidimensional effect was made! They’ll be blown away when they find out that it’s just two pieces of fabric.

The L Shelf Bracket is used to provide a platform for mounting shelves. In the past, AGAM manufactured the tool in house the with a punch press and long strips of steel. At the time, this technique was the most cost-effective and utilized the latest in technology to produce the L Shelf Bracket in large quantities. However, after each use, it was necessary to dismantle the punch press for sharpening.

We needed to find a solution to reduce labor hours and to maximize accuracy and efficiency in production. We decided the best solution was to use the laser, a process referred to as “lights out manufacturing”.

Using the laser required a re-think of the L Shelf Bracket. Each piece is now not cut as a single piece, but rather it is part of two sub-frames that surround the L Shelf Bracket and holds the group of parts together. One sub-frame is discarded and recycled and the other holds the group of parts in place for tapping and bending.

With the use of the laser technology, we were able to control quality and accuracy while decreasing production time and the number of non-compliant parts were left behind. We also used the laser beam to control the placement of parts on the bender. Angles are now consistent, the operator is safely guided through the bending process, and the CAM program is saved on the machine, which is used each time such part needs to be made.

With the rapid development of Silicone Edge Fabric (SEG) frames, we were not surprised to get requests for “fabric” doors. We took this concept and launched AGAM’s new product, the FH Door

Initially, one of our Industrial Designers fabricated a demo door that was 2’ x 2’, to see what needed to be fine tuned before fabricating the full sized door. The designer then went into our plant to discuss details with the production manager. In less than eight hours, the demo of the FH Door had been created!

Not too long ago, a customer needed a wall mount for the extrusion VS 76 and he needed it immediately, by the end of the week. AGAM didn’t have the exact extrusion that served this purpose, so it would require a “special” tooling.

If this “special” extrusion were to be made, it would be expensive and not meet the customer’s deadline. At AGAM we appreciate both the goals of our customers as well as their budget constraints. AGAM Industrial Designers are extremely well versed in our large catalog and we realized that one of our existing extrusions, Door Stop Extra Large, could work if it had a few alterations.

By using a length of extrusion VS 76 clamped to the fence of our table saw, we ran the Door Stop Extra Large through the channel of the extrusion VS 76, removing everything but the base flat section and channel insert.

Since the Door Stop Extra Large would be sliding through the channel of the extrusion VS 76, we could use the table saw to cut whatever length was needed. The Door Stop Extra Long was then drilled and counter sunk for placement of the screws that will be needed for wall mounting.

Next, we slid the Door Stop Extra Large back through the channel of the extrusion VS 76 to be drilled and tapped for set screws to hold the extrusion VS 76 in the desired position.

The best part is that this customization project was completed within 36 hours! At AGAM we strive  to provide the most efficient professional service, at a time when when even customized birthday cakes require a week’s notice! After customer approval, it only took one day for manufacturing at our in house factory located in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. And, since the customer was on the East Coast, UPS delivered it the next day!

AGAM Systems is more than just a manufacturer of extrusions and accessories. Rather, we are designers with infinite possibilities.

As an Industrial Designer at AGAM, I was tasked with creating a structure that would close off the conference room. Initially, the conference room was designed as a “semi-open space,” but it was difficult to conduct meetings without disturbing the other employees. My objective was to create a door that would act as both a sound barrier and give the room more privacy.

I began designing the sliding door by using clear glass for the top and bottom of the partition and frosted glass for the middle panel to create a visual barrier. Then I rendered the conference room partition in AutoCAD to insure the right fit, form, and function.

Next, I produced a 3D StudioMax rendering, which I presented to my fellow workers as a visual to gather a consensus on the overall look and feel of the design. They agreed that this design fit seamlessly with the current office aesthetic: sleek, modern, and contemporary.

For fabrication, all materials came from the plant, were cut-to-size, and installed (by only two people) using no tools, just hex keys. Because of the inherent modularity of the system, installation was completed in less than a day. There was no noise, no interference with people being on the phone, and no dust or smell on the job site.

The improvement, like other improvements we have made, is accomplished by using the AGAM System, which is visually appealing, easy to design with, and simple to install.
